As Katie’s shift began, she received report and began to gather her supplies. Working the night shift had its moments, but hey it is a job. Vital sign machine, flushes, alcohol wipes and we are ready to go. She decided to start at the end of the hall this time just to mix it up. Patient one , two and threes vitals were taken, and tucked in for the night. She entered patient fours room, with his wife in the bed with him, yuck! They are kissing like teenagers. oh lord here we go. It’s going to be quite the night, She introduced herself and said hello. He turned his head to look at her, and as soon as he did she saw the color Green.Green is the color of life and nature , but also the color of his eyes. Quickly, She was taken aback, which she did not fully understand. She continued to take his vital signs and perform his assessment. But those eyes. There was something so familiar in his eyes. Something that she couldn’t quite place. So Small talk she would make. while performing her assessment, and all the while never looking away from those warm green eyes. He asked for a blanket and she kindly obliged, but not for one second to stop thinking about his green eyes. Did she know him, did he know her. Was he a friend of the families or a complete stranger.
Katie continued on with her shift, other patients to see. but her mind was with the man in room 403 B. Through passing water and ice, through giving warm milk to help some sleep. She passed medications, and charted, But all the while thinking again of those beautiful green eyes. She has seen them before, she knows that she has. It wasn’t until midway through her shift, when she went to the restroom and knew! Looking in the mirror it came to her like a flash! She figured it out, the reason it was so familiar, it happened so fast! The shock in her face, the pit in her gut. Told her that she just might be right! Those eyes that looked so warm and familiar. They were the eyes that were looking back in the mirror! She sure has seen those eyes before. Yes, they were there, the eyes that has stared back at her for twenty – five years! Stunned, speechless and unable to completely comprehend. The thing that she feared , is to be true about this man! This man cannot be , but simply just mightt be! Yes, those green eyes are that of her father, and she is the one and only daughter that he left and forsake. According to her mother she was only one when he left. Now he lay in this bed with his wife and a new life, with pictures of a Son slightly younger than she. One that he has cared for, one that he loves and one that he obviously keeps pictures of. This gut feeling was after all just a feeling. So she got the courage to look at his name. Until this point he was called the man in room 403 B, so yes a name she will need. Just to put the unknowing to rest. Katie has step dad that has taken care of and loved her From the day she turned one. It wasn’t Until she was ten years old, that she learned they weren’t biologically bound. When her mom told the truth, she had given her blood father’s name. So yes she would have to look at his name. His name she read to be the name that she knew. The name of Robert E. Mitchell. Yes, that was the name. His age seemed right but the middle initial she was unsure of. So she waited until an appropriate time, and she called on her mother. Her shift was almost over, but she just needed that middle initial. Her mom said Ethan, that was his middle name, and well E was Robert’s middle initial. A coincidence this is not, and her father she just met!
Faced with a question, ” What do I do next” The contemplation took over, Does she choose door A or door B? Each path will change her forever. So she thought for a minute, and clearly had the right answer. For she chose the option that served her the best. This Green eyed man, he does not know her , nor ever will he! I am the woman I am not because of a gene or a trait. But because my stepfather has raised me so great. Katie finished her shift and gave him his last dose of medications. She said her goodbyes with gentle wave, and never said another word to the green-eyed man. Not an I’m sorry but I am your daughter. You would have known me if you only fought harder. Instead she smiled , walked out the door and to only herself said. “ You might be my father, but I already have one perfectly great DAD!”
